Located 5 minutes’ walk from Ishinomaki Station, Narumi first opened for business in 2008. The restaurant’s motto is “a relaxed, pleasant place to eat.” It may not boast the variety of a chain restaurant, but makes up for it with its flexibility and the quality of its locally sourced produce, says the owner-chef. The first floor has a private room for up to 14, two each of tables for 4 and for 6 (all of these use the hori-gotatsu seating style, where customers can put their legs in a hole under the table, meaning they can sit western style, rather than having to kneel or sit cross-legged), and a counter that seats up to 8. The second floor has a large party room (tatami matting) with a capacity up to 30. This room can also be divided into three, depending on party numbers, making it suitable for a variety of party sizes. Narumi’s menu is well suited to a relaxed meal where customers order a variety of small dishes to share. Many of the dishes on offer go well with alcoholic drinks, and customers can choose from a wide variety such as sashimi, yakitori barbecued chicken on wooden skewers, grilled fish, deep-fried dishes and many other light bites, not to mention rice dishes to fill you up at the end of your meal. The sashimi assortment gives a hearty selection guaranteed to satisfy you, and as well as daily recommendations, the chef will do his best to accommodate customers’ desires if they call a day beforehand with specific orders. The chef’s personal recommendation is, of course, the fresh seafood that only tastes this good in a city right by the sea. Centrally located near several hotels, it is a popular venue for not only visiting tourists, but also businessmen and people connected with reconstruction efforts after the 2011 tsunami. Not a few of these customers have been surprised at the volume of the banshaku set, an assortment of dishes specifically chosen to go well with alcoholic beverages.
