Hōzan is situated on Inari Kōji Street, 3 minutes’ walk from Kōtōdai Kōen Station on the Sendai Subway Nanboku Line. The business was started in 1953, deriving its name from the famous Sendai saké of the same name. The restaurant focuses on local cuisine and seafood dishes. Originally it served mainly nabe hotpots, with winter staples such as oysters, chicken or fugu blowfish. Now it has a wider menu, emphasizing locally produced ingredients, and in addition to the essential seafood also serves dishes like Sendai beef steak and ox tongue, both of which are popular with the customers. The steak, in particular, compares in quality to items served in steak specialty restaurants. The owner confesses to his interest in Japanese saké, with sommelier qualifications for the beverage, and as such Hōzan has an impressive lineup of sakés for all times of the year, including some rare brands. He is happy to give advice on different kinds of saké, and what will go well with the various menu items on offer. The first floor of the restaurant comprises table seating, a raised area with Japanese-style seating (shoes must be taken off for this) and a counter at the back. On the second floor there are 7 private rooms, 3 of which can be combined to accommodate larger parties up to a maximum of 60, so the restaurant can cater to parties of all sizes. With its emphasis on local ingredients, the menu changes frequently according to what is in season. Menu information is regularly updated on the restaurant’s website (Japanese only). Hōzan is the ideal place to enjoy a night in Sendai, with good food, good drink, and the friendly hospitality of its owner. With a variety of seasonal local delights, and a commitment to using only the finest ingredients, such as Hitomebore rice from Mt. Kurikoma, Date Umashio salt, and Sendai’s very own famous miso, your satisfaction is guaranteed.
